The often-quoted adage, “If you teach a person to fish, they will be able to sustain themselves,” reflects a widely held belief in the sufficiency of skill acquisition, opportunity, and personal agency in securing one’s success. Indeed, equipping individuals with knowledge and tools is foundational to empowerment and flourishing.
However, this framework presents certain limitations when examined against the complexities of lived experience. Many individuals, though equipped with education, skill, social capital, and a strong work ethic, still encounter outcomes that defy the expected correlation between preparation and success. Despite faithfully adhering to best practices, surrounding themselves with supportive networks, and consistently applying their expertise, some find that the metaphorical “fish” remains elusive—or absent altogether.
This raises a critical question: Is the absence of tangible results indicative of personal failure or insufficient effort? Or does it point to the inherent constraints of human agency in the face of larger, uncontrollable variables? I propose that such moments illuminate the finitude of human striving and the need to recognize the role of divine providence and grace. While diligence and preparation remain necessary, they are not always sufficient. Ultimately, it is often at the point where human effort reaches its limit that divine intervention renders the impossible possible.
So in moments when the earth groans with pain and strife, I can humbly ask for divine intervention—where our human strength cannot yield what is needed.
I’m curious — have you experienced a moment where grace met you beyond your effort?
Selah!
Grace
