This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with the Shifting Waters Leadership Institute (SWLI) as the Creative Content & Social Media Lead. What began as an intriguing opportunity quickly evolved into an experience that challenged me to grow not just as a creative professional but as a leader.
When I first joined SWLI, I was unsure of what to expect. I was aware I would be developing, producing, and managing digital material, but I did not anticipate how much the experience would educate me about myself. This internship was far from straightforward. At times, it seemed rocky. I struggled with self-doubt, deadlines, and finding a balance between creativity and discipline.
Additionally, there were moments in my personal life that tested my focus and resilience. Yet, as I engaged with SWLI’s mission of developing courageous, holistic leaders, it gradually became an individual element. It wasn’t just about the organization’s purpose. It became my own challenge: to face discomfort, rise from it, and keep showing up. The internship was more than just social media or content production: it was about discovering my voice, taking on new challenges, and recognizing that progress doesn’t happen in comfort zones.
One of the most significant lessons I have learned is that leadership and confidence do not stem from perfection. It stems from resilience, self-awareness, and a commitment to push oneself beyond one’s limits. Every obstacle prompted me to analyze not only my abilities but also my mindset: How do I create, lead, and contribute when self-doubt creeps in? Slowly, I discovered that growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones; it happens when we show up, even when it is difficult.
What made the difference for me was SWLI’s CEO, Grace Adofoli. She was a constant presence throughout the voyage. Her guidance taught me that progress is rarely easy. Her guidance helped me realize that leadership isn’t about perfection. It requires resilience, adaptation, and the confidence to continue learning one choice, task, and challenge at a time.
As we enter the fall season, I have not only been able to hone my abilities in media management and content creation but also learn more about my own voice, leadership style, and the kind of influence I want to have. This internship confirmed that genuine progress occurs when we push ourselves, embrace the hardship, and stay open to learning.
SWLI aims to develop holistic leaders, and my experience there taught me that leadership is more than just professional accomplishments. It is also about personal growth and the bravery to take on new challenges. I am forever appreciative of this experience and the lessons learned, which will serve me well as I continue to develop as a person.

The Shifting Waters Leadership Institute develops leaders who lead with wholeness, integrity, accountability, and purpose. Rooted in the belief that every person is made in the image of God—the Imago Dei—SWLI cultivates communities where leaders grow together and inspire lasting change.
