SWLI Contribution Guidelines

The Writers’ Blog at SWLI invites authentic voices, fresh perspectives, and creative expression. Here you’ll find our contribution guidelines to help you share your story, insights, or art with our growing community.

Purpose of the Writers’ Blog

As part of its mission, SWLI aims to cultivate the thought environment for formation by dispersing new knowledge, refreshing old knowledge, and generating ongoing discussion. SWLI’s blog is one way we pursue this aspiration, inviting thoughtful insights from staff, interns, fellows, and the community.

In addition to distinct pieces of writing or artwork, you are also welcome to develop mixed media submissions that incorporate both the written word and visual imagery.

Contribution Topics

Pieces should align with SWLI’s mission statement and may involve one or more of the following topics:

  • SWLI’s Formations
  • Mind-heart-body-soul connection
  • Well-being (e.g., dealing with depression)
  • Navigating various life seasons
  • Faith perspectives and integration
  • Leadership development
  • Empowering the next generation

(Note: Occasionally, SWLI may request responses to specific prompts or themes.)

Writing Guidelines

We want to amplify voices of every kind, so no need to confirm to one specific style. However, we value three characteristics in submissions:

    • Authenticity: Give us a peek into who you are through the content and tone of your writing. Strive to be personal and not overly academic.
    • Nuance: Try to avoid monolithic generalization as much as possible, developing a nuanced view of your topic from multiple perspectives.
    • Urgency: There should be a clear reason why it is important to consider this issue right now.

Length: Although there is no hard limit on word count, we anticipate that prose pieces will range from 500 to 1,500 words. If your idea is significantly longer than this range, consider developing a series of pieces.

Format: Pieces can be submitted via Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Imagery Guidelines

  • Original digital artwork or photography are preferred over AI-generated images.
  • Original pieces can range from abstract to portrait work, but please make sure it’s related to your writing.
  • If uploading multiple photos, try creating a collage or bordered layout.
  • Use of a photo series or a series of original works that correspond can be considered.
  • Please include a brief statement explaining the impetus behind your work. You don’t have to explain or interpret everything, but we would appreciate understanding your inspiration!
  • Pieces can be submitted via Google Drive.

Timeline

General pieces may be submitted on a rolling basis. Pieces submitted by the end of a month will be considered for publication in the following month. Specific calls for thematic responses will include hard deadlines.

Review & Publication

SWLI will review all submissions, considering alignment with SWLI’s organizational commitments and timing of other communications. Publication is ultimately at SWLI’s discretion. Contributors retain all rights to their work and may post in other channels or publications.
